New book published on sea lice biology and control

Apr 14, 2023

Sea lice have been a major health issue since commencement of salmon farming, and considerable effort and expenditure have been spent on control of sea lice. The estimated annual cost to the salmon farming industry is over US$1 billion globally. It is over 30 years since a dedicated book has been published on sea lice and their control (Pathogens of Wild and Farmed Fish: sea lice, edited by Geoff Boxhall and Danielle Defaye, Ellis Horwood,1993). A new book entitled Sea Lice Biology and Control has been published, and has been edited by Dr Jim Treasurer of FAI Farms, Prof Ian Bricknell from the Aquaculture Research Institute, University of Maine, and Prof James Bron from the Institute of Aquaculture, Stirling. It is published by 5mbooks.

The new book (591 pages) reviews and updates knowledge of sea lice, and provides additional unpublished  information and commentary. The latest book has contributions by over 60 leading scientists and industry experts. Several new subjects are covered including genomics, regulations governing treatment, epidemiology of infection, vaccinology, physical control methods, therapy resistance, and sea lice physiology. The book is an important source of reference for researchers, industry, biologists, veterinarians and regulators and will be of interest to those keen to update their knowledge of the biology of sea lice and control methods.
